Venetian Brass Situla, (Holy Water Bucket) c. 1550 - 1590.
Museum quality.
Details:
- This holy water bucket, Situla, was one of many Arabesque brass vessels made in Venice in the mid to late 16th Century
to serve a wealthy Venetian household.
- The Arabesque Rinceaux influence of this period, rhythmic scrolling based on stylized plants with a winding stem, can be
seen in the design.
- The heraldic shield bordered by putti is attributed to bishop Francisco Babaro, 1546 - 1616.
- The reverse side features a shield showing a skull surrounded by angelic wings, representing mortality, also flanked by putti.
- Hinged loop handle.
- Measures:
9 inches -
23 cm in height.
2.5 inches - 6.5 cm in diameter at bottom.
Condition:
- Excellent condition.
Slight parting of brass on lip of situla.
